The officer, a six-year veteran of the CPD, was shot multiple times, police said.

A Chicago police officer who was shot and killed as he was coming home from get off work early Sunday was “a victim of the type of crime he was fighting,” the city’s police chief said.

The 30-year-old officer who was killed was shot multiple times and his car was taken, Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling said at a news conference Sunday morning.

The officer, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Detectives are working to determine whether the officer was shot during the carjacking, Snelling said.

“We can’t confirm that right now, but detectives are looking into it. What we do know is that the officer’s vehicle was taken,” Snelling said. “But in order to understand the full motive for what happened we need more information and detective services are working hard to resolve this issue.”

No arrests were announced.

The shooting happened about 2:53 a.m. on West 56th Street near South Ketz Avenue near Gage Park, a police statement said. After being alerted to gunfire, police found the seriously injured officer lying on the ground outside with multiple gunshot wounds, the statement said.

The officer, a six-year veteran of the CPD, was wearing his uniform but wearing a jacket when he was shot, Snell said.

“Our officer was on his way home from the line of duty,” Snelling said. “While on his way home, the officer was shot multiple times.”

CPD said the shooting occurred in the 8th Precinct on the city’s southwest side.

“He has always worked hard to keep the community and people safe, and today this officer became a victim of the type of crime he worked hard to combat to keep people safe in this city,” Snelling said. “Here There is a lot of violent crime and there are people who live their lives in such a shameless and cowardly way that they commit these acts of violence against decent, hard-working people in this city who are just trying to live the life they want. “It has to stop the right way.

The officer is survived by his mother and uncle, Snelling said.

“He was a great officer, a great person, and his family is dealing with a lot right now. My condolences to his family. We really need to pray for his family and his mother,” Snelling said. “These senseless, senseless crimes are taking the lives of members of our community. Today, one of our police officers.”
