Mexico’s president said Wednesday morning that three Mexican nationals were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed on Tuesday.

President Andres Manuel López Obrador said one of the people had been rescued and was alive, describing him as “injured” but “safe.”

He added that two people were still missing and said the government was in contact with the families and that they were being assisted by diplomatic officials.

López Obrador stressed that immigrants often work late at night and perform “dangerous jobs,” adding that “they do not deserve to be treated like they are in the United States by some irresponsible and insensitive politicians.” .”

He said López Obrador’s government was aware of other missing persons, including a brother he believed was from Central America.

López Obrador acknowledged the situation was difficult and said his office would be in contact with the family.
