An Israeli military statement said attackers attacked the settlement of Adora near the city of Hebron on Friday night, opening fire on Israeli soldiers patrolling nearby. Israeli emergency workers said a 34-year-old man was shot in the leg and was being treated in hospital.

The Israeli army released a photo showing an M-16 rifle, knives and other weapons found on the gunman.

“We shed our blood for the martyrs of Operation Hebron and we mobilize all freedom fighters to continue the conflict with the enemy,” Hamas said in a statement.

Violence continues to increase: Since the October 7 Hamas attack and Israel’s assault on Gaza, there has been a sharp increase in violence in the West Bank, particularly against Palestinians.

According to a report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 2023 was the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since records began in 2005.
